Question 4

Do you think the theatre of the Elizabethan Age or the Entertainment media of today has any link or influence upon the social values or political ideals of the people or is it only a reflection (artistic expression) of the social values and political issues of the day? In other words - do you think entertainment (theatre or other media today) reflects (is a record) what is going on in society or influences (has an effect) on society. Support your argument with logical reasoning and at least 1 example from your knowledge of the Elizabethan Era through our novel and 1 example from present day.

In our society, does the media reflect what is going on in society or does media have an effect on society? What about in the Elizabethan Era?

Media today reflects what is going on in society. An example from today is video games. In modern shooter games, the bad guys are almost always terrorists. One example of a modern day shooter is Call Of Duty.  The bad guys are terrorists because of the war going on in Iraq. In the past, shooter games would have Russians being the main villains because the games were released during a time where the only bad guys that the world knew of were the Russians.

In the Elizabethan Era, media was reflected still but was reflected in the form of plays. Plays that reflected what was going on during the time were called histories. Shakespeare wrote quite a few histories. Shakespeare wrote histories about King John, Edward III, Richard III, Henry IV and many more. These plays told stories about the people they were about. As you can see, media reflected what was going on in society in modern times and in the Elizabethan Era.

On the other hand though, media today also has an effect on society. Nowadays, girls on tv wear short shorts when they're 12. That is now considered normal since it is seen so often on tv and on the internet. That is one way that media has an effect on society today. Another example is how violence and sex is portrayed in media today. Violence is portrayed as a normal day thing for kids in tv and video games. In real life it is not. Sex is also portrayed as an everyday thing for teens. You see teens getting pregnant and having sex in the media everyday. In the Elizabethan era, the media had an effect on society too. An example would be in Cue For Treason, Shakespeare influenced what actors acted. Another example would be in Cue For Treason, Peter saw actors and thought that their life was cool and went and became an actor.

So there is no right or wrong answer. The answer is the way you look at it. Is it a cube inside a cube or a cube with the corner cut off.

I like your main idea in this essay. I agree with your point of view of how video games affect society. But I noticed some errors. I would like to point out some grammatical errors. First of all, media does not have to be capitalized. Also, the "of" in Call of Duty does not have to be capitalized. Also, when I read your paragraphs, it feels extremely awkward. I am not completely sure why, but I think it's the way you write your sentences. (like how long your sentences are, or where you place your punctuation.) For example, "Nowadays, girls on tv wear shorts shorts when their like 12." "Shorts shorts" is one error I noticed. The first shorts does not need an "s" at the end. Also, "like" is slang. WE DO NOT WANT ANY SLANG! Those are some errors i noticed. One section that I would like to point out is: "Nowadays, girls on tv wear shorts shorts when their like 12. That is now considered normal since it is seen so often on tv and on the internet. That is one way that media has an effect on society today." How does girls wearing short shorts have an effect on society? Also, 12 year old girls wore short shorts years ago. It was still considered normal back then. I do not see how that affects media in our society, unless you are referring to the pilgrim age where no girls wore short shorts.

  3. Esteban brings up some very specific and interesting points - you may decide to make some changes for your next post.

Paula - your comment needs to be a bit more specific with some of the details. For example, he could repeat himself in various ways and make it longer, or you could offer a specific suggestion to consider looking at for adding further support.

  4. I love your examples of media effecting our social values. I don't exactly agree with you on the part where you're saying Peter saw the actors and wanted to become an actor. Peter was forced into joining the traveling actors. He didn't have any other choices.

Also, I don't quite understand what you were trying to say with "So there is no right or wrong answer. The answer is the way you look at it. Is it a cube inside a cube or a cube with the corner cut off." Can you explain please?

Next time, try to relate the question back to the novel, you will be able to find more examples from the book to back up your responses.
