A man's fate is never predetermined. No one can tell you that you have to do this or that or that you can't do this or that. Changing your life can be as easy as going to that job interview or studying for that 1 test. A good example of someone who turned their life around is Eminem, the rapper. He was very poor and never knew his father. His mother often switched jobs which resulted in Eminem changing schools very often as a child. He would get beat up, shoved into lockers, and made fun of for being the "new" kid. Eminem dropped out of high school at the age of 17 and started to work strange jobs to make money. He often attended rap battles and started to gain respect. Eminem then produced an album, Infinite, which did not gain much attention and did not make much profit. Eminem could of quit right there but he didn't. He tried again. Eminem then produced his next album, The Slim Shady Demo, which grabbed the attention of Dr. Dre, who flew out to Detroit to see Eminem participate in a rap battle and was so impressed that he signed him on the spot. The point of me telling you about Eminem was that he started as a poor boy with bad grades and from a not so great family. But he turned his life around and perservered through it and got signed. This shows that anyone can change their life around.
In the past though, it's a whole different story. If you were born in a certain class, you usually stayed in that class for your whole life. There was no lottery or superstars that could make you famous and get into another class.
You answered part of the big Q well but left a large part out - the first part asked the question in the past tense and your response only refers to the present tense. Like the Eminem connection - well explained. Don't forget to connect to the other things we have done/discussed in class.
ReplyDeleteI too agree with Ms. Lees. I feel that you left far too much information about how societies in the past functioned and how your stars could or could not be changed in the past. Great Eminem analogy, but would he have been able to change his stars back then? Also was a singer even an important occupation in the middle ages? Otherwise great summary of your opinion and I like how you said, "Changing your life can be as easy as going to a job interview or studying that one test." But does that infer that humans are lazy?
